The Rath Museum is hosting This is a Swiss Drawing (1990-2010), an exhibition from the Jenisch Museum in Vevey, produced in conjunction with the Contemporary Art Fund of the City of Geneva. Contemporary drawing in Switzerland has developed in a particularly rich and fascinating way over the last several decades. At the beginning of the 1980s, Charles Goerg and John M Armleder’s exhibition Swiss Drawing 1970-1980, already underlined the affinity of Swiss artists for this medium. Thirty years later, This is a Swiss Drawing (1990-2010) takes a new cross-section of artistic practices, using this opportunity to reflect once more on the links - proven or imaginary - between drawing and Swiss culture. The exhibition draws together the works of fifty or so artists from the different linguistic regions. Visitors are invited to discover the different branches of contemporary drawing, its deployment ranging from paper supports to digital technologies (vectorial drawing), its methods of installation and interventions in situ.

Het is de wanklank uit de hijger zelf
die hem/haar zo hijgen doet. De onderlip
krult
naar wat een hersenkwab
vol echo’s in gevangenschap dicteert.
Men hijgt, pauzeert en hijgt
in een oorzakelijk verband. Niemand
die er tijdens het hijgen last van heeft.
Later verschijnen dieren:
de angsthaas in het reuzenrad,
de kermispony die ’s nachts alles herbeleeft.

Es ist der Mißklang des eigenen Keuchens,
was den/die Keucher/in so keuchen läßt. Die Unterlippe
kräuselt sich, wie es eine Hirnhälfte
voll Echos in Gefangenschaft diktiert.
Man keucht, pausiert und keucht
in ursächlichem Zusammenhang. Niemanden
stört das während des Keuchens.
Später erscheinen Tiere:
der Angsthase auf dem Riesenrad,
das Kirmespony, das nachts alles noch einmal durchlebt.

It’s the jerky wheeze from the one who pants
makes him/her pant like that. The lower lip
curls to what a cerebral lobe
full of echoes in captivity dictates.
One pants, pauses and pants
in a causal connection. Nobody at all
is bothered by it while the panting lasts.
Later animals appear:
the scaredy-cat in the big wheel,
the fairground pony that relives everything at night.
